5 September 2024 · Monash University Malaysia

On 5 September Lat came to campus. In conversation with Dr Jalaini Abu Hassan (Jai), Chairman of the National Visual Arts Development Board, he talked about his life and his cartoons in front of more than 300 Monash staff, students and guests of all ages, then took up a marker and drew at the easel.

Afterwards many more lined up for his autograph. He signed books and posters and sketched for those who queued, and a 21-year-old student asked him to sign his electric guitar.

Lat & Jai

Lat spoke with the painter and educator Dr Jalaini Abu Hassan (Jai), Chairman of the National Visual Arts Development Board, who has held more than 25 solo exhibitions. His work has been described as “a rich tableau of text and images, drawing from Malay cosmology, contemporary global culture, nature, and the man-made environment, all viewed through the lens of the Malaysian experience”, and shown at the National Art Gallery, Ilham Gallery, ArtJog in Yogyakarta and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.

Their conversation moved through five parts:

  1. Lat, the Kampung Boy
  2. Lat, the Town Boy
  3. Forever Malaysia: Lat on diversity and unity
  4. Lat at Large: Going Downunder
  5. Any Lat’s words?
